The Canadian Urban Institute acknowledges the historical injustices and systemic disparities experienced by Indigenous peoples and marginalized communities most acutely within urban settings. Reconciliation requires recognizing and addressing the legacy of colonialism, dispossession, and cultural erasure that continue to impact Indigenous peoples’ access to land, resources, and opportunities in urban areas. Equity demands a commitment to fairness, justice, and inclusion, ensuring that all individuals and communities have equal access to social, economic, and political opportunities. By focusing on reconciliation and equity, CUI fosters meaningful dialogue to build partnerships that center Indigenous rights, knowledge, and self-determination within urban planning, policy making and governance processes. CityTalk is a vital program to address systemic barriers and promote social justice for marginalized communities, including racialized groups, newcomers, and persons with disabilities. By amplifying Indigenous voices, supporting community-led initiatives, and advocating for transformative change, CityTalk provides a public forum to challenge how to advance reconciliation, equity, and social cohesion within Canadian urban landscapes.
